GOING GREEN

Inside the Proximity Hotel

If green is your thing (and shouldn't it be?, check out what's happening in The Proximity Hotel, rising in Greensboro, N.C., and aims to be the most sustainable hotel in North America when it opens in August 2007. Here are a few things it promises:

· 100 solar panels that heat enough hot water for 100 average households.
· A Gen2 elevator, which generates its own electricity as the cab descends.
· A vegetated "green" roof atop the restaurant to help cool the place and filter rainwater runoff.
· Recycled materials that comprise about 10% of the building materials.

The hotel will even provide bicycles for guests who want to ride a nearby 5-mile greenway.
